From the location of Stone Bench (Banco de Pedra) it will be possible to observe a complete web of interconnections: points of contact between villages, humans and nature. To whoever passes by on foot or by bike, the bench welcomes you to sit for a while, simply to rest or to spend some time talking to a close friend, gazing out at the fields and admiring the unique landscapes of this region. Experiencing this bench encompasses an act of participatory witnessing, encouraged by Terrafoundation as an opportunity to reflect about issues of accessibility, pedestrian mobility and sustainability.
Inspired by an understated Mies van der Rohe parallelepiped bench for public spaces, Carrilho de Graça’s Banco de Pedra reflects a continuous search for the body. It is composed of a backrest and curves, creating an undulation that is captivating and inviting. The texture and finishing of the piece are a central part of its experience, and its extensive linear structure is ideal for outdoor spaces.
Made of Portuguese marble, a durable and sustainable material, Banco de Pedra was presented for the first time in 2017 at Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, and then at the National Coach Museum in Lisbon in 2022.
Banco de Pedra will be installed at the end of the first semester of 2025.
