"Pause" is an urban installation that creates a space to slow down, to stop, to see. To settle the mind into the body, and to settle the body into the surrounding environment.
Located alongside a major transit artery through the area, which lines the beautiful agrarian vista of the centuries-old rice fields on one side, "Pause" addresses the ways that people move through this landscape.
This installation, is set atop centuries-old rice paddies, next to the only road linking Carvalhal to its two beaches, and proposes a reflection on the way people move and the impact of their choices. The road represents the dominance of automobile traffic, and the way we prioritize speed. Pause, as an urban installation, can be accessed by foot only. It insists on the possibility of pedestrian presence, calling for pedestrian circulation and more sustainable systems of mobility.
Pause will be inaugurated at the end of the second semester of 2024.
