João Luís Carrilho da Graça

Born in 1952, João Luís Carrilho da Graça graduated in architecture from Lisbon’s School of Fine Arts in 1977. In the same year he established his own practice in Lisbon. He has received several distinctions, such as the AICA Award – International Association of Art Critics in 1992; the SECIL Prize for Architecture in 1994; the Valmor Prize in 1998, 2008, 2010 and 2017; the Order of Merit of the Portuguese Republic in 1999; the Pessoa Prize in 2008; the Piranesi Prize – Prix de Rome in 2010; the title Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic in 2010; the Medal of the “Académie d’Architecture”, Paris, in 2012; the International Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2015, the Leon Battista Alberti Prize in 2018 and the Order of Public Instruction of the Portuguese Republic in 2019. He has lectured at multiple national and international architecture schools and is currently Visiting Professor at the Accademia di Architettura in Mendrisio. He is an honorary member of the Ordem dos Arquitectos Portugueses and Doctor Honoris Causa from the Faculty of Architecture of the Lisbon University.
